The Studienkolleg NRW

Come to us at the Studienkolleg NRW in Cologne! We belong to the state-recognized Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and are centrally located in the Mediapark Cologne. With us you can take the assessment test in both German and English in the main subjects M-Medicine, T-Technology or W-Economy in order to acquire a German university entrance qualification. You can expect an international atmosphere and an intercultural exchange with participants from all over the world. Regular performance reviews ensure that you are best prepared for the assessment test. You will also be accompanied by German students from Fresenius University in the buddy program. The team at the Studienkolleg will provide you with intensive support throughout the entire phase and will always have an open ear for you.

Assessment test in German “without German”

Do you already have an official German certificate at C1/C2 level?

We would be happy to check whether the certificate can be recognized as equivalence in order to be exempted from the subject of German in the assessment test.

Register with us for the focus course M, T or W for the pure specialist courses (i.e. without German as a subject).


Admission criteria

In order to successfully complete our courses, it is essential that all candidates have a comparable level of linguistic and technical knowledge.

In addition to checking the formal requirements based on the references and certificates you submit, we get an impression of your linguistic and personal suitability in an online interview, depending on the applicant profile.

For the German-language focus areas, a completed B1 level in German is required; In the W-course, an additional A2 in English.

Our partners

The Studienkolleg NRW belongs to the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences. Since 2012, after the closure of the state preparatory colleges in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Cologne district government has commissioned this state-recognized university to carry out the assessment test.

Assessment test

The Cologne district government has commissioned the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences, Studienkolleg NRW, to carry out the assessment test, i.e.

  • We carry out the assessment test at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences on behalf of the district government directly after the preparatory courses.
  • You do not have to apply again externally to the district government; you are already pre-registered for the assessment test when you enroll at our preparatory college.
  • Your qualified lecturers at the Studienkolleg NRW will also take the assessment test in coordination with the district government and can therefore optimally prepare you for it.
  • The assessment test is officially recognized by the state. After passing the assessment test in German, you can apply for a bachelor’s degree program anywhere in Germany; The assessment test in English basically enables you to study in English in North Rhine-Westphalia.

If you do not have a direct university entrance qualification for Germany, you will usually first have to take the assessment test. Further information about the assessment test can be found on the Cologne district government website:

Preparatory courses and assessment tests

The Studienkolleg NRW runs the preparatory courses for the assessment test at the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. The Fresenius University of Applied Sciences is a private, state-recognized university with over 7,000 students in the economics and media department alone in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Idstein (near Frankfurt), Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Wiesbaden and New York. For all German and English-language economics courses, if you pass the assessment test, you will receive a guaranteed place on a German or English bachelor’s program at Fresenius University.
